Quick Notes
• Less than two weeks remain in the regular season, as Trinity International hosts St. Ambrose on Wednesday and visits Cardinal Stritch over the weekend in two pivotal CCAC matchups.
• Streaming video will be available for both games, at TIUTrojans.com.
• Entering play this week, the Trojans are in a tie for sixth place in the CCAC standings, with a 9-8 record in league play. Trinity is tied with Indiana-South Bend, and hold the tiebreaker over the Titans thanks to their 82-72 win on Jan. 30.
• As a team, the Trojans rank 11th in the NAIA with 9.2 steals per game, and are also 11th nationally with 239 total steals this season.
• Six players are currently averaging double figures for the Trojans, led by Cory Windle's 17.0 points per game. Grant Corsi (14.7 ppg), Zach Kirschbaum (13.6), Jeremy Carlyle (13.3), Thomas Amrine (10.7), and James Glass (10.5) are also in double figures at this point in the season.
• Junior forward Zach Kirschbaum is the CCAC leader in rebounds, averaging 10.2 per game, as well as blocks, at 1.7 per game. With 13.6 points per game, Kirschbaum is the only player in the conference to be averaging a double-double, and has a CCAC-best 12 double-doubles this year.
• TIU ranks 2nd in the CCAC, averaging 83.0 points per game, while St. Ambrose is 11th in the conference with 72.6 points per game, and Cardinal Stritch's 71.4 points per game ranks 14th.
• Defensively, TIU is 14th in the CCAC with 79.0 points allowed per game; SAU sits 13th in the league, allowing 77.3 points per game, while the Wolves have the 6th-best defense, with 73.7 points allowed each game.
• Trinity posted a five-game winning streak before taking a loss at No. 2 St. Francis on Jan. 23, their longest streak of the season. After upsetting No. 15 Robert Morris last on Jan. 20 for their fifth victory in a row, the Trojans briefly held the longest win streak in the CCAC.
• The Trojans hold a 2-2 mark over ranked opponents this year; Trinity won two straight over ranked opponents on Jan. 16-20, with victories over No. 14 Olivet Nazarene, and at No. 15 Robert Morris.
• The Bees come to Deerfield having dropped four of their last five, but taking a one-point home win over Cardinal Stritch on Saturday.
• Stritch took a 66-63 win over Roosevelt in their last home game on Wednesday, which snapped a three-game losing streak at home. The Wolves have gone 3-8 since the start of 2016.
• Trinity are currently 9-8 in league play, good for a tie for 6th in the CCAC standings. Due to tiebreakers, if the season ended today the Trojans would claim the 6th seed in the CCAC Tournament, matching up with the current No. 3 seed, Robert Morris. The CCAC Tournament tips off Feb. 24.
• A win for the Trojans this week would be the team's 17th of the season, and the 29th victory so far between 2014-16, marking the most wins over a two-year period for TIU since 2005-07 (16 wins in '05-'06, 14 in '06-'07).
• Trinity's win over Roosevelt on Saturday clinched a winning record, the program's first since the 1998-99 season, a span of 17 seasons.
Series History vs. SAU
• The Trojans have yet to earn a victory over the CCAC newcomers, as St. Ambrose holds a 4-0 lead in the series. The two sides met three times in non-conference play from 2003-05, and again on Jan. 5 this season, in the first contest as conference foes.
Series History vs. CSU
• Trinity's win over Cardinal Stritch on Jan. 7 this year snapped a 19-game run for the Wolves over TIU.
• Since 2003-04, Stritch holds a 27-3 lead in the series with Trinity.
Last Time Out vs. St. Ambrose
• A pair of Trojans put up 20 points, but Trinity International were unable to keep up with the host St. Ambrose Bees, falling on the road 86-60 on Jan. 5. Sean Smith finished with a career-high 23 points, while Cory Windle pitched in with 21 points on the night.
• Smith shot 7-of-16 from the field in his first ever 20-point performance, while Windle nearly recorded his first double-double, finishing with nine rebounds
Last Time Out vs. Cardinal Stritch
• Trailing by seven with two and a half minutes to play, Trinity rallied back to defeat the Wolves on Jan. 7, as junior forward Zach Kirschbaum capped off the rally with a dramatic game-winning buzzer-beater to give the Trojans the win, 75-74.
• Senior Thomas Amrine led all scorers with 21 points, knocking down seven three-pointers in the win. The Ramstein, Germany native came up just one more trey short of his career high, as well as the TIU single-game record. Kirschbaum finished with his fifth double-double as a Trojan, recording 15 points and 14 rebounds. Corsi also finished in double figures, with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
National Leaders
• The Trojans rank among the top 15 in NAIA-II in steals per game (11th, 9.2), total steals (11th, 239), and turnover margin (14th, +3.0).
• On the offensive end, TIU ranks 34th in scoring average, thanks in large part to a total of 227 three-pointers made this season, 25th-best in the NAIA.
• The Trojans rank among the NAIA's top 50 teams in all five major categories: total points (20th, 2,158), rebounds (33rd, 1,011), assists (46th, 383), steals (11th, 239), and blocks (19th, 102).
Career Milestone
• Senior shooting guard Thomas Amrine has collected 934 points during his Trojans career, just 66 shy of joining the 1,000-point club.
• Amrine would become the 19th player in Trinity International history to reach 1,000 points.
• Last season, Trinity had two of the 18 previous 1,000-point scorers on the same team, in center Nate Ball, and guard Dillon Wadsack.
• Ball finished his Trojans career 13th on the program's all-time scoring list, with 1,304 career points. Wadsack is 14th, with 1,170 points.
Trojans in the Polls
• Trinity International has appeared in the NAIA Division II Coaches Poll 21 times in program history, but not since the 1997-98 campaign.
• Trojans's last ranking came on Jan. 6, 1998, when the Trojans came in at No. 20.
• The highest ranking in program history was during the 1995-96 season, when Trinity was at No. 3 in the Jan. 22, 1996 poll.
Magic Number
• On the defensive end of the court this season, the 80-point mark seems to be the key for a Trojan victory. Fifteen times this season, TIU has held their opponents to under 80 points, and the Trojans have gone 14-1 in those games. When allowing 80 or more points, Trinity has only two wins in eleven tries, with one of those victories coming in the double-overtime win at Illinois Tech on Jan. 12.
• In the two seasons of the Roberts era, Trinity holds a 26-5 mark when their opponents score less than 80 points, and a 3-22 record when the other side hits the 80-point plateau.
New Signing
• The Trinity International men's basketball program received a major boost in the 2016 recruiting class, when the Trojans announced the signing of Mark Smith, a 6-7 forward from Riverside-Brookfield High School (Riverside, Ill).
• Smith is a two-year starter for Riverside-Brookfield and Head Coach Tom McCloskey. The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press Illinois High School Rankings at the 4A level. Smith has his squad off to a great start this season, as the Bulldogs sit at 6-1, with the only blemish a shorthanded loss to Gonzaga College HS out of Washington, D.C., the 23rd-ranked team in the USA Today National Rankings.
Up Next
• The final two games of the regular season are on tap next week. The Trojans will step outside of conference play on Tuesday, Feb. 16 to host Maranatha Baptist (Wisc.), before taking on 16th-ranked Robert Morris on Senior Night, Saturday, Feb. 20.
