Softball earns sweep over Beavers

WHEELING, Ill. – Cranking six extra-base hits between both games, including five triples off the bats of five different Trojans, Trinity International earned a doubleheader sweep over the Blackburn (Ill.) Beavers at Heritage Park on Saturday afternoon.

Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2 | Season Stats

The Trojans (4-8) took game one by a tight 4-3 margin, scoring all four runs in the 1st inning, then holding on for the win, as freshman pitcher Taylor Carli pitched a complete game, striking out seven while allowing three runs. In the second game of the day, Trinity overcame an early 3-0 deficit to win by the run rule in the 6th inning, 11-3.

Trinity blasted a season-high 12 hits in the second game, with every player that stepped up to the plate collecting at least one base hit. Alyssa Doomis, Breanna Hansen, and Justine Wigboldy each put in 2-for-3 performances at the plate, and scored a combined seven runs in the game. Hansen allowed just two hits through six innings in the circle, earning the win in her first start of the season.

After Blackburn put up one run in the top of the 1st, and two more in the 3rd, the Trojans answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs on four hits to tie the game. TIU then took a big lead by hanging six runs up in the bottom of the 4th, as Valerie D'Ambrosio, Hansen, and Emily Doomis combined to hit three triples in the inning.

The Trojans closed out the game in the 6th, scoring twice on back-to-back errors to claim the eight-run lead needed to clinch the win.

In the first game of the day, Trinity jumped out to 4-0 lead in the 1st inning, with the highlight of the frame coming on Jamie Stanton's two-RBI triple to right. Blackburn was held to without a single hit outside of the top of the 3rd, when the Beavers pounced for three runs on four hits to make it a one-run game. Carli shut the door the rest of the way to earn her third victory of the year.

The Trojans will now prepare for the CCAC opener next week, when they host Cardinal Stritch at Heritage Park. First pitch against the Wolves is set for Wednesday, March 23, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
