Softball splits with Wolves in CCAC debut

WHEELING, Ill. – Tori Livingston's two-out, two-RBI single during a three-run 5th inning highlighted Trinity International's first conference victory in nearly five years, as the Trojans split Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinal Stritch Wolves, winning game two 3-0 after falling in the opener 6-0.

Freshman pitcher Taylor Carli recorded her first career shutout in the win, working around eight hits and striking out three. The Lombard, Ill. native worked efficiently, not allowing any walks throughout the game while none of the eight hits allowed were for extra bases.

The Trojans (5-9, 1-1 CCAC) had struggled at the plate throughout the day, and had just one base hit before the 5th inning rally. Justine Wigboldy's one-out single started the run, before three straight Trojans reached base with two outs on the board. Following an Allison Naujokas walk that moved Wigboldy to second, sophomore catcher Alyssa Doomis gave Trinity the lead with a single to right center. Livingston then added two more insurance runs with another single, scoring both Naujokas and Doomis.

Once the Trojans were in front, Carli shut the door, retiring the Wolves (10-6, 1-1 CCAC) in order in the 6th and 7th innings.

In the first game of the day, CSU's Tori Burke pitched a complete-game two-hitter, keeping the Trojans off the scoreboard in a shutout win. A 1st-inning throwing error allowed two runs to score to put the Wolves in front early. Stritch expanded their lead to 5-0 in the top of the 4th on a three-run home run before tacking on one more in the 7th to close out the scoring.

The win marks the first in CCAC play for Trinity since April 21, 2011, snapping an 84-game conference losing streak. That day, the Trojans also took a home 3-0 win over Cardinal Stritch.

The Trojans will look to make it two in a row on Saturday, when they hit the road to face the Calumet St. Joseph Crimson Wave. First pitch from the Whiting Sports Complex in Whiting, Ind. is set for 12:00 p.m.
