Softball suffers pair of losses in day two of Florida trip

LEESBURG, Fla. – Alyssa Doomis's first-inning home run marked the first long ball of the year for Trinity International, but the Trojans suffered a pair of losses in day two of The Spring Games, 8-2 to Cornerstone (Mich.), and 8-0 in a shortened contest to Viterbo (Wisc.).

Doomis went a combined 2-for-4 over both games to lead Trinity (1-3) at the plate, driving in two RBI and scoring one run.

The Trojans took an early 2-0 lead over the Golden Eagles on Doomis' home run, which also drove in Allison Naujokas, who reached base as a hit batter to lead off the frame. Cornerstone responded with three runs in the top of the 2nd to take the lead, then tacked on another run in the 3rd to make it a 4-2 score.

With a pair of walks and another hit by pitch, the Trojans loaded the bases in the bottom of the 3rd but were unable to push across a run to close the gap. A 5th-inning grand slam blew the game open for the Eagles, as Trinity was retired in order over the final three innings.

In game two, freshman pitcher Taylor Carli kept her team in the game, allowing just one earned run over 4 1/3 innings, but a fifth-inning rally from Viterbo gave the V-Hawks a run-rule win. Viterbo took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd, after a leadoff error helped load the bases with no outs, but the Trojans got out of the jam allowing just a single run.

In the top of the 5th, Trinity put the tying run at second base, as Breanna Hansen advanced on Valerie D'Ambrosio's sacrifice bunt, but TIU was unable to capitalize. Viterbo took advantage of three errors and six base hits in the bottom half of the frame to close out the game by an 8-0 margin.

The Trojans are back in action early tomorrow morning, when they face the 19th-ranked Marian (Ind.) Knights, beginning at 8:00 a.m. CST. TIU will then face off in a rematch with Ohio Christian at 10:00 a.m. CST.
