DEERFIELD, Ill. – Trinity International were unable to avoid the big inning on Saturday afternoon, falling in both ends of a twinbill to the St. Ambrose Bees. A pair of seven-run rallies in the 3rd and 5th gave the Bees a 15-5 win in the opener, followed by an 8-6 final in game two.
Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2 | Season StatsAdam Gomski and
Jon Debowey each drove in three RBI over both games, while Jon Grotelueschen put up a three-hit performance in the second game of the day, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Trojans (16-19-1, 6-12-1 CCAC) took an early lead in the 1st inning of game one, when Grotelueschen and Lindberg reached base with a single and an error to lead off. Gomski's sacrifice fly brought home the first run of the day, and Debowey's single through the left side of the infield put Trinity in front by a 2-0 margin.
St. Ambrose (21-22, 15-8 CCAC) used a seven-run 3rd to move in front however, on five hits including back-to-back home runs.
Adam Vignola crushed his second home run of the season in the bottom of the 4th, but the Bees responded with another seven in the 5th to put the opener out of reach.
In game two, the Trojans again put up a crooked number in the 1st inning, as Gomski and
Michael Balistreri each drove in runs to give TIU a 2-1 lead. The Bees used a leadoff double and single to set the table for a three-run 2nd, in which the three runs scored on an error, walk, and wild pitch. Trinity got one back in the bottom half of the inning on
Jeff Lindberg's RBI single, driving in
Scott Krawiec.
Three more runs in the 5th gave the Bees an 8-3 advantage, before Debowey's sixth home run of the year made it a 8-5 game. Gomski brought home his third RBI of the day in the bottom of the 6th, bringing in Grotlueschen to cut the deficit to 8-6. The Trojans would record leadoff singles in two of the last three innings, but were unable to rally and tie the game.
With one base hit in the first game and three in the second, Grotelueschen has the longest hitting streak of the season for TIU, now at 12 games. Lindberg's reached-base streak was snapped in the opener however, ending at 29 consecutive games and stretching back to the fall season.
The Trojans return to the TIU Baseball Field on Tuesday afternoon, when they host Maranatha Baptist (Wisc.) for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m.
