BENSENVILLE, Ill. – A total of seven players came away with a base hit, but Trinity International struggled with runners on base, in a Friday night road defeat to the Robert Morris Eagles, 10-1.
Box Score | Season Stats
The Trojans (19-21-1, 7-14-1 CCAC) went 4-for-18 (.222) at the plate with runners on base, and grounded into three double plays on the night. Three straight singles from
Jeff Lindberg,
Adam Vignola, and
Jon Debowey in the top of the first gave Trinity their best scoring opportunity, but the inning ended on back-to-back strikeouts without the Trojans getting a run on the board.
Robert Morris (22-17, 13-10 CCAC) pounced for two runs in the 2nd inning, using two base hits and two walks to earn the early lead. The Trojans kept the home team in check through the middle portion of the game, but the Eagles tacked on another run in the 6th with a one-out, RBI double.
Trinity cut the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the 7th, when
Joel Stephenson reached base with a hit-by-pitch, then advanced to third on Jon Grotelueschen's single. A fielding error on the next at-bat allowed the junior to come home for the Trojans' first run. RMU responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning however, then tacked on three runs in the 8th to pull away.
The Trojans and Eagles will rematch for a doubleheader on Saturday, when the two teams meet at the TIU Baseball Field. First pitch for the series-ending doubleheader is set for 2:0 p.m.
