Baseball splits with Panthers as Bruner collects 10th win

LA PORTE, Ind. – Senior pitcher A.J. Bruner collected his 10th win of the season in a pitcher's duel on Tuesday, as Trinity International split a doubleheader with the Purdue-North Central Panthers, winning game one 4-3, but dropping the nightcap, 8-1.

Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2 | Season Stats

Bruner scattered six hits over his seven-inning complete game, marking the 10th time this season the senior has gone the distance. Bruner finished with six strikeouts to just one walk, allowed three earned runs.

Neither side were able to generate much offense, until the Trojans (22-22-1, 10-15-1 CCAC) pushed a run across in the top of the 5th. Justin VanderNaald reached with a single to left field, advanced to third on a fielding error, then scored on a passed ball to give Trinity a 1-0 lead.

Jon Debowey gave his team a 2-0 lead in the top of the 6th with a single to right center, driving in Jeff Lindberg. The Panthers responded by loading the bases in the bottom half of the frame, but only scored one, thanks to a 4-6-3 double play getting Bruner out of a jam. Jon Grotelueschen's two-out double in the top of the 7th drove in two more runs to stretch the Trojans' lead to 4-1.

Trinity were able to close out the win in the bottom of the 7th despite the home team collecting two runs on three hits, resulting in a 4-3 final score.

In the second game of the day, the Panthers used a three-run 3rd inning and a two-run 4th to take a commanding 5-0 advantage midway through the game. The Trojan bats went quiet during the nightcap, with TIU's lone run coming in the 9th inning, with Zachary Pepper's first career RBI as a Trojan.

The Trojans finish out the regular season this Friday and Saturday, with a three-game series with the Roosevelt Lakers. First pitch from Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood, Ill. is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 29. The Trojans will then host a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m., which will include the team's Senior Day festivities between contests.
