Lakers late rally sinks Trojans

CRESTWOOD, Ill. – Trinity International held a fifth-inning lead, after A.J. Bruner's two-RBI double, but the Trojans were unable to hang on down the stretch, falling to the Roosevelt Lakers 10-5 on Friday night.

Box Score | Season Stats

Bruner went 2-for-4 on the night, as the lone Trojan to post multiple base hits. The Trojans (21-22-1, 10-16-1 CCAC) took an early lead, taking advantage of three walks and a throwing error to score twice in the top of the first without a hit. With the bases loaded, Michael Balistreri reached on the error, allowing Jon Grotelueschen and Jiri Vavrusa to come home.

Trinity extended their lead in the top of the third, using three straight singles to move ahead 3-1 on Justin VanderNaald's two-out base hit, scoring Bruner.

The Lakers (21-21, 12-15 CCAC) responded in the bottom of the 4th, scoring three times on three hits to take a 4-3 lead. Bruner's RBI double briefly put the Trojans back in front during the top of the 5th, but Roosevelt reclaimed a 6-5 advantage with a sacrifice fly, and a go-ahead two-out single. RU would go on to score in each of the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings on their way to the 10-5 final margin.

The Trojans were unable to get on the scoreboard beyond the 5th inning, despite loading the bases in the 8th, and putting two runners on in the 9th.

Trinity return to Deerfield for the final time in the 2016 regular season on Saturday, when they host Roosevelt for a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m. The team will honor its senior class before the first game, with the festivities beginning at 1:00 p.m.
