Softball falls at home to Eagles

DEERFIELD, Ill. – A bases-clearing triple from Alyssa Doomis highlighted a four-run 5th inning that gave Trinity International the lead in game one of a doubleheader with Robert Morris on Tuesday, but the Trojans surrendered four runs in the final two frames, opening the door for a sweep for the Eagles, 7-5 in eight innings, and 17-8 in a darkness-shortened game two.

Emily Doomis collected a team-high four hits on the day, as six Trojans in all had multi-hit performances over both games. The Trojans (9-27, 3-19 CCAC) fell behind when the Eagles scored one run in each of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th, innings, but moved in front during a rally in the bottom of the 5th.

After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Trinity posted three straight singles to load the bases. Alyssa Doomis then tied the game with one swing, tripling to straightaway center and driving in Taylor Carli, Emily Doomis, and Justine Wigboldy. Trinity then took a 4-3 lead in the next at-bat, when Jamie Stanton brought home Alyssa Doomis with a single up the middle.

A two-run home run in the top of the 7th put Robert Morris (12-30, 7-15 CCAC) back on top, but TIU would battle back again. Two RMU fielding errors allowed Emily Doomis to reach base, then after advancing to third on a wild pitch, score the tying run.

The Eagles went ahead again in the top of the 8th, scoring twice to take the 7-5 lead. Trinity would get the tying run to the plate in the bottom half of the frame, but were unable to put together a rally.
In game two, Robert Morris attacked early, scoring five runs in the 1st and 2nd innings, followed by three more in the 3rd to claim a 13-3 lead. Tori Livingston brought the Trojans back in the game with a grand slam to center field, her fifth home run of the season, making it a 13-8 score. Robert Morris added four runs in the top of the 6th before umpires called the game due to darkness.

The Trojans will wrap up the 2016 regular season Wednesday afternoon, when they host the St. Ambrose Bees on Senior Day. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3:00 p.m., with the Senior Day presentation to take place between games.
