Trojans fall in four tight games at Roosevelt

CHICAGO, Ill. - Junior libero Becca Kowalczuk finished with a career-high 25 digs, while freshman hitter Ashlyn Spay recorded a double-double on the night, but Trinity International dropped three close sets in a 3-1 loss to the Roosevelt Lakers on Tuesday night.

Box Score

Spay led the Trojans (6-15, 1-4 CCAC) with 12 kills to go with 13 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Alida Knudtson picked up nine kills, while Gabby Miller collected eight.

Tied 9-9 in the opening set, Roosevelt (6-10, 2-3 CCAC) used an 8-2 run for their largest lead of the game at 17-11. Kills from Spay and Miller would slightly close the gap, but the Lakers would close out the set with a 25-20 win.

The Trojans led throughout most of game two, using a four-point rally to claim an 8-5 lead early on. After Roosevelt tied the game with three stright of their own, TIU used a 6-1 rally, highlighted by kills from Spay, Mickayla Stall and a service ace from Knudtson, moving ahead 14-9. With a four-point advantage for Trinity at 23-19 however, the Lakers put together six straight points to steal the game at 25-23.

Game three saw a big lead for the Trojans, who responded after the previous game by taking a 10-3 lead that included three aces from Kowalczuk. Roosevelt would eventually pull even at 16-16, but TIU would take another 6-1 run, with two kills from Knudtson, and go on to win by a 25-19 final.

Looking to force a fifth game, the Trojans never led but would tie the score at six different points in game four. A Roosevelt attacking error evened the score at 20-20, but a kill and an ace would put the Lakers back on top 22-20. Staal and Lexie Voss teamed up for a block at 22-21, and Voss would tie the game again on the next point, 22-22. Roosevelt would close out the match with a kill at 23-22, followed by back-to-back blocks for their second conference win of the year.

The Trojans return to Van Dixhorn Arena on Wednesday night, when they host Silver Lake (Wisc.) in non-conference play beginning at 7:00 p.m.
