DEERFIELD, Ill. - A frenetic two-goal comeback and an opportunity to claim a overtime victory came up just short on Saturday afternoon, as Trinity International fell 3-2 in extra time to the Cornerstone (Mich.) Golden Eagles at Schartner Field.
Box Score | Season Stats
The Trojans (1-3) overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit thanks to a penalty kick from
Zach Reget in the 69th minute, and a header goal from Kyle McNamera with less than a minute left in regulation that forced overtime. In the second extra session, however, Cornerstone lofted a shot just under the crossbar to take the sudden-death victory.
Cornerstone (2-3) jumped out early, taking advantage of a 4th-minute goal to move in front 1-0. The Eagles then doubled their advantage in the 24th minute on a header, moving in front 2-0.
Reget put away his second goal of the year, and first penalty of the early season, to cut into the deficit with 20 minutes to play. McNamera's equalizer was his first collegiate goal and looked to set the Trojans up for a result, but with three minutes until the end of extra time, the visitors would find the game-winner.
The Trojans will take the next week off after playing in four matches over the last eight days; Trinity will be back in action at No. 12 Campbellsville (Ky.) on Saturday, September 10. Kickoff against the Tigers is set for 1:00 p.m. CDT.
