After winning game four to force a decisive fifth set, the Trojans (4-7, 1-0 CCAC) were behind 14-11, fending off four match points before taking the set on a 6-1 run. "It was awesome to see us grind," said TIU head coach
Luke Ward. "None of the girls were frightened, no one wavered, we just talked about what we wanted to do in that last timeout, what our offense was going to look like, and they went out and performed. They were awesome tonight."
Trinity started the night strong, hitting a match-best .323 in the opening set while leading wire-to-wire. A quick five-set run for the Eagles (1-7, 0-2 CCAC) closed the gap, but
Mickayla Staal would finish the set with one of her seven kills on the night. The Trojans looked poised to take a two-set lead over the visitors after two RMU setting errors made it a 23-21 score, but Robert Morris would battle back to take the final four points and even the match at 1-1.
The weakest set of the night came in the third, when Trinity struggled to side out, allowing runs of five, four, and four points as the Eagles would take a 25-18 win. Robert Morris held a lead late in the fourth as well, nearly closing out the match, but a five-point response put TIU in front 21-18. Kills down the stretch from
Lexie Voss and
Gabby Miller, along with a pair of RMU service errors allowed the Trojans to force game five.
Back-to-back kills from Miller gave Trinity an 8-6 edge in the fifth, but Robert Morris would respond with a 6-2 run to take the lead, 12-10. Two more Trinity errors gave the Eagles match point at 14-11, but two attacking errors and a Voss kill would even the score. RMU's Sam McArthur took the kill on the next point to give the Eagles another match point opportunity, but Staal would answer with a kill of her own, tying the score again.
Ashlyn Spay finished off the night, earning the match-winning kill to complete the comeback.
Miller finished with a career-high 12 kills to lead the Trojans, while hitting .235 on the night.
Becca Kowalczuk matches her career-best for the third time, recording 21 digs. Freshmen
Kayla Jacks and
Piper Thompson split time at setter, finishing with 21 and 19 assists, respectively.
The Trojans hit the road next week, as they continue CCAC play with a trip to Cardinal Stritch on Tuesday, September 13. Tipoff from Milwaukee is set for 7:00 p.m.
