Box Score HUNTINGTON, Ind. - In their best overall performance of the season the TIU Men's Basketball team got their second win in as many days, defeating Huntington University 90-77 in the Championship game of the Ness Bros. Hall of Fame Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Tyrone Carey was phenomenal yet again for TIU, as the Junior tallied a career best 31 points to lead the Trojans.
Greg Carlyle and
Jeremy Carlyle both scored in double figures, and
Thadeous Johnson posted his first double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 boards.
An uncharacteristic slow start shooting the ball gave Huntington the advantage at the break as the Trojans only managed 36 points and trailed 43-36 after 20 minutes.
The second half saw the Trojans find their stroke shooting right from the get go. Huntington grabbed an early three point basket, but a bucket from
Rick Wright followed by three consecutive three point field goals from J. Carlyle and Carey gave TIU a 61-57 lead they would not relinquish. Â
"This was a great win for our young team, on the road against a good opponent in a difficult environment," said Head Coach
Boomer Roberts. "Our second half was the best 20 minutes we played all season."
"We had some guys really step up defensively, lead by TJ Johnson. Greg, O'Shae, Jeremy and Sam took on the challenge of guarding a fantastic player, and I thought we really locked in on Coach noel's scouting," added Roberts.
Carey was named the tournament MVP after a strong performance in both games, scoring a combined 54 points.
Greg Carlyle was named to their All-Tournament team for his key contributions all weekend long.
The Trojans will head to Whiting, Indiana to open CCACÂ play against Calumet St. Joseph on Wednesday evening.
