Sophomore first baseman
Michael Balistreri hit his first career home run in the opener, the first homer of the year for Trinity (8-10, 0-2 CCAC). Balistreri's shot cut the Titans deficit in half in the top of the 5th, but would be the only base hit for Trinity throughout the game. Freshman pitcher
Chris Isaac scattered six base hits and three earned runs in a solid losing effort.
The Trojan bats would awaken in game two, highlighted by a four-run rally in the 4th inning, but South Bend would crank out 18 runs on 15 hits to pull away with the doubleheader sweep. The first five hitters of the inning would reach base beginning with back-to-back walks for
Adam Gomski and
Ethan Jarvis. Freshman
Nick Chorney would drive in two runs with a double to left, then freshman catcher
Michael Luker tied the game at 4-4 with a two-RBI single. IU-South Bend responded with a nine-run bottom half of the frame, then five more runs in the 5th inning to secure the win on the 10-run rule after the 7th inning.
The Trojans now prepare for the 2017 home opener, scheduled for next Wednesday, March 29, against Purdue-Northwest. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1:30 p.m.
