Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball falls in doubleheader to Purdue-Northwest

DEERFIELD, Ill. - Trinity International would score three runs in the final two innings, coming up just short in erasing an early deficit in the first of two games with Purdue-Northwest on Tuesday afternoon, but the Trojans would drop both contests to the Pride, 5-4 in game one, and 16-2 in game two.

Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2 | Season Stats

Freshman pitcher Chris Isaac looked strong outside of a five-run 2nd inning, retiring nine straight hitters and 13 out of 14 midway through the first game. The Trojans (8-12, 0-4 CCAC) started to battle back in the bottom of the 3rd, when Jeff Lindberg's sacrifice fly scored Matt Latimer to put TIU on the board, 5-1. Jacob Hood then scored on Michael Balistreri's 6th-inning single to cut further into the deficit and make it a 5-2 score.

After freshman Nick Chorney led off the bottom of the 7th by reaching base on a dropped third strike, Nick Gerht would record a single then advance to second to put two runners in scoring position. Chorney would score on Lindberg's groundout for the senior's second RBI of the game, and Gehrt would come home on Adam Gomski's RBI single to put the Trojans within a run of the visitors, 5-4.

Purdue-Northwest (11-7, 4-0 CCAC) would jump ahead early in game two, scoring in each of the first three innings to take a 6-0 lead. Michael Luker led the bottom of the 3rd off with a walk, and would score the Trojans' first run of the game on a fielder's choice by Gehrt. In the 4th inning, Michael Balistreri hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot that pulled TIU closer at 6-2.

The Pride would put the game away by scoring multiple runs in each of their last three innings, finishing out the win by run rule after seven innings. Gehrt finished with a team-high four base hits over both games, going a combined 4-for-7 on the day.

The Trojans wrap up the current homestand on Friday afternoon, when they begin a three-game set with the Robert Morris Eagles. First pitch for Friday's single nine-inning game is set for 3:00 p.m.
