WHEELING, Ill. - A pair of solid pitching outings were not quite enough to overcome a tough day at the plate, as Trinity International dropped both ends of their home-opening doubleheader to the Indiana-South Bend Titans, 1-0 and 6-3 at Heritage Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman pitcher
Grace Magnuson made the best start of her young career in game one, allowing just two hits and one run over five and two-thirds innings. The Trojans (2-14, 0-4 CCAC) surrendered a sacrifice fly in the top of the first, after IUSB's Taylor Astell was hit by a pitch, then stole second and third to set up the only run of the game. Magnuson did not allow a hit until the third inning, giving up a one-out single, then recorded a strikeout and pop-out to end the frame.
Trinity had chances to tie the game, out-hitting Indiana-South Bend (8-6, 3-1 CCAC) by a 7-3 margin and leaving a total of six runners on base. The team's first two hitters reached base to start the 3rd and 4th innings, but a pair of ground outs in the 3rd, and a double play in the 4th quickly ended the rally.
In the second game of the day, Trinity jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st, when
Payton Carli reached on an IUSB fielding error, then later scored on a wild pitch with two outs. The Titans would take advantage of two Trojan errors in the top of the 2nd to post two runs and take the lead, then with three singles in the top of the 3rd, extended their advantage to 4-1.
A two-RBI double in the top of the 6th gave South Bend a 6-1 lead, but the Trojans would rally with two outs in the bottom of the 7th to close the gap. After the first two hitters of the inning were retired in order, freshman center fielder
Payton Carli would draw a walk, then score on
Alyssa Doomis' triple in the next at-bat. A base hit from
Sara Grygus drove home Doomis to pull the Trojans to within three, but TIU were unable to complete the rally.
Grygus led the way for Trinity at the plate, collecting a pair of base hits in each game and finishing 4-for-7 overall.
Payton Carli finished 1-for-3 with a walk in game two, scoring two of the team's three runs and recording Trinity's lone stolen base on the day.
The Trojans are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they hit the road to face the No. 16 St. Francis Saints. First pitch from Joliet, Ill. is set for 3:00 p.m.
