The victory is Trinity's first over a nationally ranked-opponent since 2006, when the Trojans swept No. 18 St. Xavier in a conference doubleheader.
Freshman pitcher
Grace Magnuson put forth her second solid performance of the week, working around four hits and six walks to give up just one earned run through five innings. Sophomore
Taylor Carli came on in relief in the 6th inning, walking one but not surrendering a base hit the rest of the way.
After the Saints (21-3, 5-1 CCAC) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Trinity (3-15, 1-5 CCAC) took advantage of a throwing error to open up the top of the 5th.
Jamie Stanton would tie the game with an RBI double to right center, scoring
Josie Emricson. In the following plate appearance
Jessica Vroman would be hit by a pitch, setting the table to
Payton Carli's two-RBI triple. Junior catcher
Alyssa Doomis then added to the Trojans' lead by driving home Carli with a single through the left side.
In the second game of the day the Trojans would struggle at the plate, as USF pitcher Jensen Tchorzynski would take a no-hitter into the 7th inning.
Payton Carli would lead off the top of the 7th with a single to end the drought, but Trinity would be unable to overcome runs scored in the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th innings to give the Saints the win.
Carli would be the lone Trojan to finish with multiple hits on the day, going a combined 2-for-5 with a walk in each of the two games.
The Trojans return home on Friday afternoon to face the Calumet St. Joseph Crimson Wave for a CCAC doubleheader. First pitch from Heritage Park in Wheeling, Ill. is set for 1:00 p.m.
