Judson sweeps Trojans on two late comebacks

ELGIN, Ill. - Trinity International held a lead in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, but late rallies from the Judson Eagles resulted in a sweep over the Trojans, 2-1 in extra innings in game one, and 5-2 in game two.

Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2 | Season Stats

The Trojans (11-21, 7-11 CCAC) struck first, when Payton Carli hit a leadoff single, stole second base, and later scored on a Judson throwing error. The Eagles (25-10, 10-4 CCAC) responded in their next trip to the plate, tying the game at 1-1 with three singles in the top of the 5th.

Freshman pitcher Grace Magnuson put in a solid six innings of work, allowing just one earned run while scattering eight hits, and was relieved by Taylor Carli as the Trojans played in their fourth extra-inning affair in their last seven games.

Judson took a 2-1 lead with a leadoff solo homerun in the top of the 8th; the Trojans would put two runners on base in the bottom half of the frame, but were unable to push across the game-tying run.

A two-out infield single allowed Judson to score the first run of game two in the top of the 1st inning, and that single run would hold up until the 6th, when Trinity took advantage of another fielding mishap. A leadoff walk from Jessica Vroman, and a bunt single from Payton Carli set the table for Doomis, who reached base on a dropped catch at first base, allowing two runs to score and putting Trinity in front 2-1.

The Trojans quickly retired the first two hitters in hte 7th, forcing Judson to their final out. Two singles followed, setting up a three-run home run to put the Eagles in front 4-2. Another solo shot in the next at-bat finished the scoring, giving Judson the come-from-behind win.

Trinity will wrap up the current eight-game road trip on Wednesday, when they take on the Olivet Nazarene Tigers beginning at 3:00 p.m.
