Box Score DEERFIELD, Ill - A strong second half effort, including multiple key baskets down the stretch sealed the victory for the Trojans, as TIU improved their record to 13-5 (6-2 CCAC) with a 90-80 win over St. Ambrose on Saturday afternoon.
"Anytime you shoot 38% from the field and win, you have to feel good about it," said Head Coach
Boomer Roberts. "For the third game in a row we were missing one of our key guards, but our guys stepped up with their focus, especially on the defensive end and on the glass."
Greg Carlyle led the way for the Trojans offensively as he tallied a team high 24 points in the win. The Junior duo of
O'Shae Williams and
Tyrone Carey each finished with 18 points a piece, rounding out the Trojans top performers.
After a back and forth opening half, with neither side able to grab more than a 5 point lead, the second frame saw the Trojans finally find their stride shooting the ball. With TIU leading by 3 with just 5:06 remaining in the game, Trinity would go on an 8-2 run to extend their lead to 9.
Nate Schmidt put forth his best game of his career as the Freshman knocked down three second half three pointers including a clutch long range bucket with 2:05 to go to make it a 14 point game, and seal the victory.
"Greg was fantastic again, and O'Shae, Ty, and TJ all gave us great efforts on the glass," added Roberts. "Nate was huge down the stretch, hitting a few big shots that gave us some breathing room. We then knocked down our free throws which helped offset our poor shooting."
The Trojans are back in action next Wednesday as they take on the top team in the CCAC when they hit the road to face Governors State at 7:30 PM.
