CHICAGO, Ill - Trying to improve on their season high win streak the TIU Softball team earned a split in their doubleheader Monday, defeating the St. Xavier Cougars 2-0 in game one before suffering a 5-2 defeat in the second game of the afternoon.
In the opening game of the day the Trojans and Cougars found themselves in a pitchers duel as both
Taylor Carli and Allison Golic threw 5 scoreless innings to open the game.Â
The Trojan bats seemed to have gone cold in the early going but just like they've done all year TIU found a way to find clutch hitting late. In the top of the 6th inning
Payton Carli notched a two out single that starteted the rally. Lauren Neveaufollowed it up with a triple to the left field corner that scored Carli and sealed the win for TIU.
Sara Grygus would then add an insurance run after driving in Neveau with an RBI single before T. Carli shut the door and gave TIU a 2-0 win.
The second game of the day the Trojans again struggled getting into the hit column, only managing 2 runs on 8 hits in the game.Â
SXU got on the board in the the 1st inning on a three run homer from Taylor Sterkowitz which eventually proved to be the difference. The Trojans would get a pair of runs back late in the game but two insurance runs from SXU closed out the win and ended the Trojans win streak at 9 games.
The Lady Trojans look to bounce back tomorrow as they host Calumet St. Joseph on Senior Day at 3 and 5 PM.
