TIU comeback stopped short by Spartans

BANNOCKBURN, Ill. --- On a chilled, windy afternoon, the Trinity International University football team welcomed the Missouri Baptist University Spartans to Leslie Frazier Field in Mid-States Football Association-Midwest League action.

With the wind playing a factor early on, both teams put a focus on a heavy running game, backed by short passes near the line of scrimmage. The Spartans were able to crack the scoreboard first with a 22-yard touchdown pass from John Lux to Isaiah King with the wind at their back with just under five minutes gone in the first quarter.

TIU responded late in the second as Jimmy Campbell found the endzone on a two yard run. While the Trojans were unsuccessful on the PAT attempt, Campbell's score was able to cut Missouri Baptist's lead to 7-6 as the two teams headed into the halftime break.

MBU used two impressive drives in the third quarter to extend their lead. In just two plays, Lux found King for their second connection of the day on a 47-yard touchdown pass. Later on in the period, Campbell was intercepted by the Spartan's Collin Thomas, which would set up a five minute drive that MBU capped off at the end of the period with a six yard touchdown pass from Lux to Darian Pollian. After a missed PAT, the Spartans entered the fourth with a 20-6 lead.

During the Trojan's second drive of the fourth, Campbell put his impressive running skills on display as he carried TIU down the home sideline for a 74-yard touchdown run to chip away at the MBU lead. While the Trojans on their ensuing drive were able to run the ball through the MBU defense, the offense was ultimately stalled just past midfield, allowing the Spartans to take over possession and hold on for the 20-13 win over TIU.

The Trojans hit the road for their next game on Saturday, October 19 as they travel to Davenport, Iowa to take on the Saint Ambrose University Fighting Bees. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00PM.
