Trojans win three of four in weekend tournament

FORT WAYNE, Ind. --- The Trinity International University volleyball team continued its stellar play over the weekend as it won three of four matches at the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament, hosted by Indiana Tech at the Schaefer Center.

The Trojans opened up play on Friday afternoon against the Cougars of Indiana-Kokomo. TIU held the Cougars to just a .105 attack percentage and forced 21 errors as they rode to a three set sweep, 25-14, 25-22, 25-20. Sara Andric recorded 12 kills in the win as well as two ace serves to lead the TIU offense, while Penina Sao notched 11 digs.

Shortly after the win over the Cougars, the Trojans quickly turned around to face the Concordia (MI) Cardinals. For the second straight match, TIU shutdown any offense threat as they held the Cardinals to a .099 attack percentage. Backed by five team aces, Brianna Torres came alive to record 19 kills, while Sao tallied 14 more digs on the day as TIU rolled to another 3-0 win, 25-21, 25-23, 25-21.

Late Saturday morning, the Goshen College Leafs got their chance to take on the Trojans. After jumping ahead two sets to none, the Leafs struck back to take the third set by a score of 21-25. However, behind Sao's five service aces and 23 digs, TIU rebounded and won the fourth 25-22 to pick up their third win of the weekend.

Against the home Indiana Tech Warriors, the Trojans were held to a weekend low .133 attack percentage as they battled to sweep all their opponents on the weekend. Despite 14 kills from Torres and 11 digs from Andric, the Trojans were unable to slow the Warriors down as Indiana Tech handed TIU their lone loss of the tournament, 20-25, 23-25, 21-25.

For her outstanding play over the four weekend matches, Torres was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 16.8 kills, 0.8 service aces and 9.5 digs per match.

With only six matches remaining in the regular season, the Trojans return to the court on Tuesday, October 15 as they travel to take on the Olivet Nazarene Tigers in Bourbonnais. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
