UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. --- The Trinity International University men's basketball team battled the Governors State University Jaguars on Saturday afternoon in their first road game in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action. After dropping their CCAC opener on Wednesday night at home against Indiana Northwest, the Trojans looked to pick up their first win in league play.
The Jaguars jumped out to an early lead in the opening minutes before TIU jumped ahead on a big three-point basket by Thadeous Johnson. Both teams would battle it out in the trenches of the paint between TIU's Micah James and GSU's DeAndrey Robinson as both fought in a tug-of-war like flowing game. The Trojans shot 47% from the field in the first 20 minutes of play and hit five three-point shots, but struggled to control possession as they turned the ball over 12 times in the opening frame. Still, despite giving up 20 points off of turnovers, the Trojans entered halftime break trailing by only three points, 43-40.
In the second half, the excellent shooting continued for TIU. The Trojans hit seven more shots from beyond the arc and shot over 50% from the field. However it would be the Jaguars who dominated the rebounding battle in the second half, out-rebounding TIU 27-11. GSU was able to ride the hot shooting of Chris Pride and Justin Siorek to a hot finish as the Jaguars defeated the Trojans 93-83.
Five Trojans scored in double-figures, led by James' 21 points and four rebounds. Brandon McQueen notched 17 8 in the loss, while Johnson recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards. Trevor Ross, who made three baskets from downtown finished the game with 12, while Ron Pehka ended the day with 11.
TIU returns to action on Wednesday, November 20 as the host the Roosevelt Lakers at 7:30PM at Van Dixhorn Arena in Deerfield.
