BANNOCKBURN, Ill. --- The Trinity International University Trojan volleyball team played host to the Robert Morris Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Van Dixhorn Arena in their final regular season home match of the season. Prior to the match, TIU honored their two senior players, Sara Andric and Penina Sao.
After a close start, the Trojans pulled away in the first set behind kills for Matty Hawkins and a service ace by Madeline Decker. The TIU offense rolled down the finish as they took the first frame by a score of 25-19. Trinity International's offense caught fire in the second set as they jumped out to a fast 20-7 lead over the Eagles off a series of RMU errors. Andric closed out the second with a service ace as the Eagles began to find momentum, winning 25-13.
The Eagles gave the Trojans trouble in the third. After TIU jumped out early, RMU's began to take advantage of TIU's offensive mistakes. Ultimately, it was the Eagles who prevailed in the third, winning a close battle, 25-23. The Trojans were quickly able to move past the closely contested third as their offense re-emerged behind Deb Kovalczuk and a stiffened blocking game. In the end, the Trojans shut down the Eagles momentum and escaped with a 25-18 win in the fourth set to take the match three sets to one.
Andric ended the match with a game-high 16 kills on offense, while Skyler Muramoto notched 32 assists. Sao, who totaled 14 digs on defense, brought her collegiate career dig total to 1,966, just 34 away from reaching the 2,000 career dig milestone.
TIU hits the road for the final two matches of the season, beginning with the Saint Ambrose Fighting Bees on Tuesday, November 5 at 7:00PM in Davenport, Iowa.
