DAVENPORT, Iowa —- The Trinity International University volleyball team took on the Saint Ambrose University Fighting Bees on Tuesday night in southeastern Iowa. Entering the match, the Trojans sat in third in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) standings as the final week of the regular season began.
After defeating the Bees earlier in the season at home, the Trojans continued their excellent play against St. Ambrose. On the offense backing of Sara Andric and Kierra Koepke, TIU was able to fend off a late SAU rally in the first set to take the opening frame, 25-19.
The Bees continued their momentum in the second set. After falling behind early, SAU tied the set at 13 before taking advantage of TIU's defensive errors and their own offensive firepower. SAU would win the second frame, 25-21.
TIU would not let the Bees go any further as the Trojans locked down and shut down the opposition. The Trojans, behind Anna Skrzypchak, Deb Kovalczuk and Matty Hawkins, would block nine shots at the net, compared to SAU's sole block. As the Bees began to make errors offensively, the Trojans took advantage, winning the third and fourth sets both 25-18, to win the match 3-1.
Andric led TIU with 14 kills on the night, followed by Koepke and Hawkins with eight each. On defense, Penina Sao totaled 31 digs, putting her just three away from reaching the 2,000 career dig milestone. Additionally, Skyler Muramoto totaled 33 assists, while Hawkins also notched three solo blocks and two block assists.
The Trojans will conclude the 2019 regular season on the road on Thursday, November 7 as they visit the Indiana Northwest Redhawks in Gary. First serve is set for 7:00PM.
