GOSHEN, Ind. --- The Trinity International University men's basketball team took on the Goshen College Maple Leafs on Saturday afternoon at Gunden Gymnasium. Coming off a close loss a week earlier to Harris-Stowe State, the Trojans were eager to return to the court and put together another solid performance.
Despite falling behind early, the Trojan stayed with the Leafs for the entire first half of play. TIU used an 8-0 run at the four minute mark to jump ahead by eight points. With Goshen tightening the gap in the final minute of the first half, the rebounding of Brandon McQueen and shooting of Nate Schmidt helped put the Trojans up by six as the teams went to the locker room for halftime, with TIU leading 44-38.
With 18 points off the bench and 40 in the paint, the Trojans used a strong inside game to take advantage of the Leaf's defense. With seven minutes to go in regulation, Ron Pehka hit a critical three point shot that helped TIU maintain at least a seven point lead for the remainder of the game. The Trojans would hit 11 baskets from beyond the arc and 47% from the field on the day as they pulled away late to defeat Goshen 93-79 for their first win of the young season.
Four Trojans scored in double-digit figures, including McQueen with a double-double of 20 points and ten rebounds, as well as Thadeous Johnson, with 15 points and 17 boards. Pehka would record 22 points while Brandon Lawani notched 12 in the victory.
TIU returns to the court next Saturday, November 9 as they head to Fort Wayne to take on the Indiana Tech Warriors. The opening tip is scheduled for 2:00PM CST.
