DEERFIELD, Ill. - After picking up a pair of wins vs. Maranatha Baptist on Monday the TIU Baseball team picked up their third straight win after earning a split in a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader with St. Ambrose. Freshman
Blake Lazaris was the hero in game one after an RBI double sent the Trojans to a walkoff 9-8 win over the Bee's.
The Trojan offense opened game one on a tear, scoring three runs in the second inning to take a 3-0. Lazaris would drive in a run with his first hit of the day, followed by a Mike Balistreri double and an
Enyel Santana sacrifice fly to put the Trojans ahead early.
After the Bee's found the scoreboard in the 3rd with their first run of the game the Trojans offense continued to hit consistently, scoring four fins over the middle three innings.
Matt Latimer, Eammanuel Andujar and Lazaris all recorded RBI base knocks to give TIU a 7-1 lead.
Despite the big lead heading into the final two innings the Bee's continued to battle. SAU scored seven unanswered runs between the 6th and 7th inning to take an 8-7 lead heading into the final frame.
After two quick outs to open the inning the Trojans looked all but done, but after
Matt Pierson reached on an error the Trojans offense once again came to life. Andujar drove a single to center field that scored pinch runner
Michael Luker from second, the eventual game tying run.
With the winning run at first base Lazaris wasted no time for the Trojans, driving the first pitch down the right field line to score Andujar, giving the Trojans their first win over SAU since 2014.
The Trojans will look to keep their strong play going this weekend when they travel to South Bend, Indiana take on the IUSB Titans on Friday afternoon.
