The Trinity International University women's soccer team played host to the Siena Heights University Saints (1-1) on Saturday, August 31. The Trojans started off strong, dominating possession and finding the wings well, but struggled in the final 30 minutes.
The Trojans (1-1) competed well, going into hard tackles and closing down the Saints attack. Siena Heights totaled 11 shots in the first half but struggled to find the frame. TIU's five first half shot attempts were all on goal, but could not find the back of the net as both teams went into the halftime break tied at zero a piece.
The Saints came out hard in the second half delivering the first goal of the match from midfielder Mia Dronchi, being assisted by Elizabeth Furgason after beating three players on the wing in the 48th minute.
TIU would struggle over the next 20 minutes as the Saints would control play and possession. The Trojans would find their opportunity after a service by senior Kaylee Wallentine, who found the backside of the defense to be deflected to freshman Kalie Rice, who in turn laid it back for senior Makena Walker, who found the top left corner of the net in the 67th minute to tie the game at one.
The scoreline would not be level for long as the Saints marched down the field and scored off a header from a service into the box from Dronchi just 40 seconds after TIU's goal. Despite a few late opportunities, the Trojans were unable to find the net again as they dropped their first game of the season by a score of 2-1.Â
TIU will host Viterbo University on Monday, September 2, at 12:00 PM at Schartner Field.
