Lady Trojans fall to Viterbo in final seconds

The Lady Trojans took on the Viterbo V-Hawks Saturday in a competitive match lasting 110 minutes on Monday afternoon at Schartner Field.

TIU (1-2) and Viterbo both started the match with good possession on both ends of the field, but could not find many shooting opportunities. The Trojans started off strong, keeping possession in the Hawks half for the first 15 minutes, but could not capitalize. That was until Lauren Henn took the first shot for TIU in the 18th minute, just barely out of reach from Hawks goalkeeper Abby Breitbach.

Viterbo would get their opportunities, but goalkeeper Becca Wells took control of her own box, allowing very few chances for Viterbo to convert. TIU would score again after a missed clearance turned into a follow up from the midfielder Hannah Fuchs in the top corner to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead at the end of the first half.

The V-Hawks came out strong in the second half, earning a penalty kick after Sydney King was brought down. King stepped up and buried the opportunity to give the Hawks life to start the second. Just minutes later, a missed clearance from TIU, Katie Hilby got her opportunity to even the match and delivered, tying the game at two goals a piece.

After 19 minutes of overtime play, and with no real chances for either team to strike in extra time, a corner kick in the final seconds of the game, taken by Rachel Rudd would serve directly into the goal, giving the V-Hawks the overtime winner and ending the match 3-2.

The Trojans return to Schartner Field to take on York College on Friday, September 6 at 2:30 PM.
