The Trinity International University women's soccer team took on a pair of difficult opponents in a double header this weekend as they took on York College out of Nebraska on Friday afternoon, and Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday.
TIU started strong against York when Hannah Fuchs opened up the scoring in the 13th minute after a great build up play found Makena Walker on the wing for a great service into the box for Fuchs to slide and finish it in the goal.
Just minutes later, the ball would fall to Cameron Hunter after missed clearance by York to give her an open shot on goal to put the Trojans up 2-0. Freshman Sarah Davis got the start in goal for TIU on Friday but she did not see much action as she received little pressure from the York offense.
Possession would remain in TIU's favor as they tallied another 14 shots, scoring another two goals in the late minutes from Hannah Fuchs for her second, as well as a chip over the keeper from Lauren Corral for her first goal of the season. Breanna Bembenek would put the Panthers on the board in the final minutes to avoid the shutout as the Trojans picked up the 4-1 victory.
Less than 24 hours would pass for TIU as the Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats would come to Deerfield to play. The first half was all Wildcats with 15 shots compared to TIU's four, but senior goalkeeper Becca Wells would hold off the wildcats until the 45th minute, when the Wildcats would find Deja Edwards over the top and a slight touch over Wells to give IWU a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Trojans would possess the ball more in the second half, but the Wildcats would still have more control with seven shots, and another shot from Edwards that would find the side netting for her second score of the game. Despite a late push from TIU, the Trojans were unable to find the back of the net as they dropped the match 2-0.
The Trojans return to action on Saturday, September 21 as part of homecoming weekend as they host the Saint Ambrose Fighting Bees at noon at Schartner Field in their conference opener.
