TIU extends winning streak to seven at OCU Tournament

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio --- The Trinity International University volleyball team continued their winning ways over the weekend as they stretched their winning streak to seven matched after compiling three victories at the Ohio Christian Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

TIU opened up competition on Friday night against the host Ohio Christian Trailblazers. in three to start the weekend off strong Friday, (25-12, 25-19, 26-24). 

The Lady Trojans were on top of their game, never losing their composure at any moment and playing together. In an all in team effort, the Trojans had a number of players leading the team in every area on the floor. Brianna Torres led the team in kills with 16, while Penina Sao led TIU with digs with 19. Jacqueline Decker notched 20 assists in setting up the Trojan attack as TIU swept past the Trailblazers in straight sets, 25-12, 25-19, 26-24.     

The Trojans opened up Saturday play against the Montreat College Cavaliers in another three set sweep, 25-23, 25-17, 26-24. 

TIU worked hard throughout the series, dominating Montreat 43-29 in kills and having the edge in digs 84-76 was a key reason for the team's success. Torres notched 11 kills, followed by sophomore Matty Hawkins with 10. Torres also led the team in digs with 20 followed by Sao with 16.   

The Trojans faced a tough challenge in their final match of the tournament against the Shawnee State Bears. After dropping the first set by four points, TIU rebounded and evened the match with a seven point win in the second, followed by a ten point victory in the third. The Bears forced a decisive fifth set, where the Trojans rallied for the thrilling win, 21-25, 25-18, 25-15, 20-25, 15-9.

Freshman Skyler Muramoto had an impressive game directing traffic for the Trojans, amassing 45 assists. Sao notched 35 digs on defense, as Sara Andric led the team in kills with 19. 

The Lady Trojans will be back in action this Tuesday, September 24 as they resume conference play on the road against Governor State University in University Park. First serve is set for 7:00 PM.
