The Trinity International University men's soccer team took on Viterbo in a fierce match Monday afternoon at Schartner Field.
TIU (2-1) started off very strong, not allowing Viterbo (1-3) many opportunities into the box. Viterbo freshman Andrew Weedle was brought down in the box by the Trojans, giving a penalty kick opportunity to the V-Hawks early on in the half. Calvin Brown stepped up to take the free kick for Viterbo, but was denied by Trojans junior goalkeeper Andre Wentzel. Minutes after that, TIU took a shot that was blocked, but fell to Nick Willard, who took the volley and buried it in the top corner past V-Hawks goalkeeper Nate Regas in the 20th minute. The half would end 1-0 in TIU's favor, and momentum would continue their direction in the second half as well.
The Trojans took 24 shots in the match, hitting the frame 15 times, while Viterbo had just seven shots with six on frame. TIU would add an extra run after a foul was called on Viterbo, allowing senior captain Luke Stell to strike the bottom corner of the goal, just out of reach by Regas. Stell's goal would ice the game as the Trojans ended the game with a 2-0 victory.
The Trojans return to action of Friday, September 6 as they host Aquinas College at 1:00 PM at Schartner Field.
