UPLAND, Ind. --- The TIU softball team played their first true road games of the season on Tuesday afternoon as they travelled to east-central Indiana to face Taylor University in the first doubleheader of their 2021 spring break trip around Indiana and Illinois. Coming off a pair of wins over NCAA Division III Ripon College last week to open the season, the Trojans looked to keep the momentum alive as the season entered its second week.
In game one, Hailey Baker got the start on the mound after a dominating performance last week against Ripon. After grabbing an early lead thanks to a Kristin Storer solo home run in the third inning, Taylor roared back with an eight run third inning as part of their dominant 15 hit display in the opener.
TIU would score four runs in response in the fifth inning on a Heather Anderson RBI single and a Britney Knox double to left field. Taylor could have the last say as their offense rolled down the stretch with seven runs over the final two innings to hand Trinity the tough 15-6 loss.
In game two, Alyssa Frey took the mound, looking to repeat her strong performance from the second game in TIU's opener last week. While the Taylor offense did not overwhelm Trinity, it did strike a tough blow early with four runs in the first three innings.
Knox was able to record her second double of the day, but TIU's offense struggled to put runners on base with just three hits and only one walk allowed by Taylor's Lauren Kanai. Despite a Waverly Miller single in the seventh inning, Trinity could not find enough juice late for a rally, falling 4-0 in the second game of the day.
