MISHAWAKA, Ind.. --- The Trojan softball team wrapped up their 2021 spring break trip through Indiana on Saturday afternoon as they visited the Pilots of Bethel University at Gardner Field. After a tough week offensively, TIU looked to cap the five day, eight game road trip on a positive note.
Trinity jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game one of Saturday's doubleheader as Dana Percival launched a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. The Trojans would hold the Pilots scoreless through the first two frames before scoring five runs off TIU starter Alyssa Frey in the third frame off of five hits.Â
Bethel would add two additional runs in the fourth on a one out, two run home run by Haley Ragonseni. While TIU would be unable to fully make up the deficit, they did score two runs in the seventh inning off a Lauren Neveau sacrifice fly to left field, and on an error by the Bethel shortstop. The Trojans dropped game one by a final score of 7-4.
Hailey Baker would take on starting pitching duties in game two, and would toss four scoreless innings after giving up two runs to the Pilots in the first. Brooke Heraty would post an impressive performance at the plate, launching a solo home run to put Trinity on the board in the second, and sending another ball over the fences in the fourth on a two-run shot to give TIU the 3-2 lead.Â
Kristin Storer would scratch another run across home plate in the sixth on a Gina Loy RBI single, while Waverly Miller would reach home on an infield error on a Baker infield ground ball. Bethel scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one-run game, but the Trojans would have one last push in the tank with a three run seventh, scoring on a Percival single to drive in Kayla Stacy, and two runs on a Madison Lenzke single, giving the Trojans enough cushion for an 8-4 win.
