Baker fans eight as Trojans split Wolves

BANNOCKBURN, Ill. --- The TIU softball team began the first of back-to-back doubleheaders on Friday afternoon as they welcomed the Cardinal Stritch Wolves to campus for a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader. Coming off a split at Roosevelt last week, the Trojans looked to pick up a pair of wins heading into a busy weekend of action.

Hailey Baker would start for the Trojans in the pitcher's circle for game one, and threw on point for all seven innings. Giving up just three runs and one walk, the right-hander struck out eight CSU batters on 122 total pitches. Offensively, Trinity got out to a quick start in the first inning as Brooke Heraty drove home the game's first two runs for the blue and white with a two-run double to right-center field scoring Heather Anderson and Britney Knox.

After Cardinal Stritch cut the lead in half in the third, Madison Lenzke would double to center, scoring Hailey Kuriger to make it 3-1 TIU. Kristin Storer and Knox would bring home Trinity's final two runs in the sixth as Storer reached base safely on an error by the CSU first baseman to score Kayla Stacy, while Knox's RBI single to center brought Storer home to give the Trojans a 5-1 lead. While the Wolves were able to tack on two more runs in the seventh, TIU closed strong defensively to take game one by a 5-3 final.

In game two, the Trojans would turn to Alyssa Frey pitching, looking for the sweep of the CCAC's 12th place team. While Frey would only walk one batter, the right-hander would allow five runs on nine hits on 149 pitches. Trinity's defense would also struggle with three errors in a game where the Wolves carried their late game momentum over from late in the opener.

Entering the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 5-0, TIU scraped together three consecutive hits by Anderson, Hearty and Dana Percvial to load the bases with no outs, with Percival's hit driving home Anderson to put the Trojans on the board. Unfortunately the late push would not be enough as Trinity would drop game two by a 5-1 final score to split the doubleheader.
