WHITING, Ind. --- After splitting Cardinal Stritch at home yesterday afternoon, the TIU softball team returned to the road on Saturday as they visited the Crimson Wave of Calumet St. Joseph in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader at the Whiting Sports Complex.
Hailey Baker would start game one for TIU, looking to replicate her strong performance from Friday's opener. While the Trojans were able to take a quick 1-0 lead in the first on a Heather Anderson groundout to score Kristin Storer, the Crimson Wave would kick off an impressive hitting display on the day with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, and two in the second.
With Baker lifted after two frames, Alyssa Frey, fresh off a 149 pitch game in Friday's second game, entered in relief, where she would give up three runs on a Sydney Murph two-run single and solo home run. Frey would scratch TIU's final run across home plate in the top of the seventh as her RBI single would score Dana Percival as Trinity dropped game one by a final of 7-2.
The Trojans would strike early again in game two as Storer scored in the top of the first on a wild pitch. After two runs were scored by CCSJ in the bottom of the first, TIU scratched across three base runners as Madison Lenzke grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Frey to score from third, while Britney Knox notched a two-run single scoring Lauren Neveau and Baker to make it a 4-3 game in TIU's favor.
Calumet St. Joseph would score three in the bottom of the third before Knox and Neveau scored Trinity's final two runs on a pair of infield errors by the Crimson Wave to give the blue and white a brief 7-6 lead. With Baker pitching in relief of starter Kristin Storer, CCSJ scored four runs in the final two frames off of the senior to hand TIU the 10-7 loss.
