Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer roars past IU-Northwest for first win

BANNOCKBURN, Ill. --- The TIU men's soccer team returned home to Schartner Field on Wednesday afternoon as they played host to the Redhawks of Indiana University Northwest in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play. Coming off a difficult 4-1 loss at Viterbo on Monday, the Trojans returned home eager to snap their six-match losing streak and earn their first win of the 2021 season.

Things would not start off well for Trinity as they fell behind to the Redhawks in the seventh minute on a goal by Vitaily Prots, the only score of the first half. TIU would turn up the heat in the second half and completely shut down the IU-Northwest offense. Sean Fenton would put the Trojans on the board in the 50th minute on a pass from Caleb Wells, while Josiah Joseph connected with Josiah Fuchs just two minutes later for the go-ahead score.

Joseph would record his second assist of the match late in the 59th minute on a pass to Xavier Brown to put Trinity up 3-1, before scoring himself in the 85th on an assist from Fuchs. Jonny Mueller would put the final touches on TIU's second half rout with his first goal of the season on a pass from Fuchs as the Trojans picked up their first victory of the season in a 5-1 win.

ADDITIONAL GAME NOTES

  • Wednesday's win improves TIU's all-time record against IU-Northwest to 2-0.

  • Trinity has outscored the Redhawks 11-2 in their two meetings (2019 and 2021).

  • TIU's victory snaps their five-match losing streak this season, and their six-match losing skid dating back to the end of the shortened, postponed COVID-19 season of 2020.

  • The Trojans dominated offensively, outshooting the Redhawks 26-3 in the match, including 17-2 in shots on goal. Both shot and shots on goal total are season-highs for TIU

  • Trojan goalkeeper Armin Mahmutovic faced very little opposition from IU-Northwest after giving up an early goal in the seventh minute of play. The freshman from Chicago would record just one save as he earned his first career victory in goal.

  • Sean Fenton's goal in the 50th minute was his first of the season, and fourth of his career. It was his first goal scored since Sept. 6, 2019 against Aquinas (Mich.)

  • Caleb Wells' assist on Fenton's second half goal was his first of the year, and fifth of his career.

  • Josiah's Fuchs' 52nd minute score was his first goal of 2021, and 12th of his college career. The senior from Provo, Utah leads all active Trojans in goals scored.

  • Xavier Brown's goal in the 59th minute was his second of the 2021 season, and tenth of his career. Brown previously scored Trinity's first goal of the season in Monday's loss at Viterbo.

  • Josiah Joseph's assists on Fuchs and Browns' goals were his first two of the year, and give him four assists in his career.

  • Joseph's 85th minute goal was his second of the season, and tenth of his collegiate career. Joseph joins Fuchs and Brown as the only other active TIU players with 10+ goals in their careers.

  • Jonny Mueller netted his first goal of 2021 in the 86th minute to cap the win. The fourth goal of his career, Mueller, a member of the 2020 NCCAA All-North Central Region team, scored three goals in his first season with Trinity last year.

  • Fuchs assisted on both of TIU's final two goals of the match from Joseph and Mueller, giving him his first two assists of the season, and eighth and ninth career assists. Fuchs now leads all active Trinity players in career assists.
