BANNOCKBURN, ILL. --- Back on the court after a couple weeks off due to COVID protocols, the Trojans came out strong against the #23 Cougars of Saint Xavier earlier this afternoon. Trinity played a tight game throughout the first half of the game but began to feel the effects of the time away from the court as the Cougars pulled ahead late in the third quarter and ended the game with the win, 57-70.
The Trojans came out strong, looking to press the Cougars and delay their attack. After four minutes of play, Taylor Hibicke sunk a jumpshot to tie the score at 8-8. Unfortunately, Saint Xavier strung together an 11-4 run in the final minutes and finished the first quarter with a seven point lead.
Catching their stride again, Trinity gained momentum with a 14-4 run to start the second quarter. Now in the lead, the Trojans kept up the defensive pressure and held the Cougars to 25% shooting accuracy. Alina Jahnke and Daniela Lopez were defensive forces beneath the net with four rebounds each. With about three minutes remaining Saint Xavier made a push for the lead but was quickly overtaken again after a 3-pointer by Alina Jahnke.
Trinity started the third quarter with a two-point lead and maintained the go ahead point for the majority of the quarter, but in the final minutes their momentum and composure fell away as they were outrebounded and gave nearly double digit fouls. Saint Xavier took the lead with four minutes left and slowly began to pull away, ending the third quarter with a score of 43-52.
Now behind on the scoreboard, Trinity tried to create an offensive spark with a 10-4 run midway through the final quarter and brought the score within 10 points. With less than three minutes remaining the Cougars hit a couple of back to back layups and took victory out of reach.
