Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Trojans can't overcome early deficit, fall to Tigers at home

BANNOCKBURN, ILL. ---  In their opening match of 2022, the Trojans faced off against the Tigers of Olivet Nazarene. Five Trojans contributed double digit points, but it wasn't enough to overcome Olivet's early lead and the Trojans lost 80-97.

Trinity came out strong with the initial six points before the Tigers countered and the teams traded the lead. The Trojans tied up the score at 15-15 with five minutes left. Olivet dropped a 3-pointer shortly after and began a 13-4 run, ending the first quarter with the lead, 36-21.

Throughout the second quarter the Trojans fought to keep the scoreline tight, holding Olivet below 25% shooting accuracy. Six different Trojans added to the scoreboard, including Alina Jahnke and Breleigh Gula with 100% from the free throw line. Defensively, Trinity created five turnovers and forced three blocks and steals each.

Starting the third quarter behind 15 points,Trinity came out of the break in a domineering fashion with a couple of big plays; first Carly Scheblo with the steal and pass to Taylor Hibicke for a layup and then a minute later a block by Da'Naria Washington before a Scheblo rebound and layup of her own. With the lead cut to ten points, the Trojan bench was on their feet and calling for a comeback. Unfortunately, that's the closest the Trojans would come as Olivet finished the third quarter on a 10-2 run.

Olivet opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and shortly after Carly Scheblo dropped her third of the night, on her way to tying her career high 3-pointers made per game. Despite keeping the Tigers below 40% shooting accuracy and outrebounding them, the Trojans defensive effort wasn't quite enough and their comeback was never fulfilled.
