BANNOCKBURN, Ill. --- For the first time in over a decade, the Trojan volleyball program joined in the Homecoming festivities, hosting the Crimson Wave of Calumet College of St. Joseph. Roughly an hour after start, TIU walked away with their 10th sweep of the season.
The Trojans surged ahead with eight kills and a service ace, forcing the Crimson Wave to call their first time out with the score set at 8-3, TIU. The break in time worked to the Crimson Wave's immediate advantage as the Trojans gave up an attacking error when play resumed, but Trinity was able to quickly refocus and continue growing their lead with two separate three-point runs. Leading by six points, TIU took two more from the Crimson Wave after a service then attacking error, drawing another time out from Calumet. The Trojans claimed seven of the next twelve points to claim the first set, with an exciting final point a smashing kill from Lana Vujosevic.
Trinity exploded to another early lead, going up 4-0 with Vujosevic at the serve position. Brianna Torres notched two kills, while Nadia Wheeler added one alongside an ace by Vujosevic. Trading points and the serve, the Crimson Wave pushed back, but to no avail as the Trojans continued to burst forward. Anna Skrzypchak set up the point by Torres to move herself to the serve position, then landed an ace before a bad Calumet set gave the Trojans a ten-point lead. Behind 11 points, the Crimson Wave called for a time out. From the break, TIU gave up an attack error then grabbed five of the next nine points before a lull of three consecutive attack errors and two service aces. At 15-22, the game was within reach of the Trojans when Coach Ward called for time to gather the team. Halsie Keltner came out swinging and notched her third kill of the night before Vujosevic earned the penultimate point and Desirae Pisano aced to close out the set.
In the final set, both teams started strong with the score tied and leads changed multiple times until Trinity finally landed what would be the final lead of the game from a kill by Vujosevic on her way to a second consecutive double-double. With a 10-9 lead, the Trojans capitalized on a slew of errors from the Crimson Wave bringing the score to 17-13. Throughout the remainder of the game, the Trojan defense would hold strong allowing just three additional kills for Calumet while the Trojans notched the final eight points to seal the clean sweep.
Senior Emma Gallegos earned a team-leading and season high three service aces while freshman Theresa Romero led with three blocks. Lana Vujosevic earned another double-double while leading in digs, and second most kills and aces.
The Trojans (15-4, 5-2) are on the road again on Tuesday night as they travel to Roosevelt University for another CCAC match-up against the Lakers.Serve is scheduled for 7:00pm at the Goodman Center in Chicago, Illinois.
