Trojans come from behind to claim victory over the Lakers

CHICAGO, Ill. --- Last night the Trojans took a short trip downtown to square off against conference rival, Roosevelt University. After dropping the first set, the Trojans came back and claimed the following three to defeat the Lakers and improve their record to 16-4 while holding second place in the CCAC.

A slow start for the Trojans, Roosevelt took a quick and convincing lead in the opening set. Earning just six kills and giving up errors of the same, Trinity struggled to garner any offensive momentum and gave up costly mistakes to aid the Lakers in a 17-25 victory.

In need of a complete turnaround, the Trojans faltered at the start again dropping 2-5 to the Lakers. Senior Lana Vujosevic gave the Trojans a spark to tie the score with back to back kills followed by Nadia Wheeler, all three points assisted by Anna Skrzypchak. The Lakers broke free and took the lead again before trading points with TIU throughout multiple momentum swings on both sides. An ace by Libero Jaylyn Freeman tied the score at 13-13 before another quick exchange of points and the lead. Benefiting from back to back mistakes by Roosevelt, TIU retook the lead 17-15. With the score again tied at 20-20, the Trojans were coming alive again with a service ace from Skrzypchak, followed by big blocks from Wheeler, Genesis Porter and Brianna Torres. A service error by the Lakers followed by an ace from Freeman took the set 25-22 for Trinity.

Both teams ready to battle, the third set saw the score tied eight times with four lead changes as it was forced to extra points. The Trojans held the two largest runs of the game at three points each, consisting of both errors and kills. A kill by Halsie Keltner tied the game 23-23 before an attack error by the Lakers gave TIU the go ahead point. Roosevelt came back with a kill to tie and force extra points. Fifth year veteran Torres notched another kill then the Trojans capitalized on a Lakers error to win the set, 26-24.

The Trojans found themselves behind 12-6 before they were gifted two points from error followed by a crushing block by Keltner and Porter to draw the Lakers within a three point reach. At 10-15, Trinity caught another spark with kills from Madison Williams and again by Keltner. Shortly after, Vujosevic landed back to back kills to tie the game at 16-16 on her way to a career best 25 kills for the night. A kill by Isabella Acosta light the final flame needed for the Trojans to run away with the fourth set and overall victory as Porter notched the winning kill.

Senior Lana Vujosevic crushed a career high 25 kills on the Roosevelt side of the fence while leading the team in kills and aces on the night (3). Junior transfer Genesis Porter also shone bright with three block assists and a .300 hitting percentage in her fourth career appearance for the Trojans.

The Trojans (16-4, 7-2) are on the road again this weekend as they travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene University for a tri-match on Saturday afternoon.
