TIU takes straight sets at Trinity Christian

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill.—Last night the Trojans took the short trip down the highway to face the Troll of Trinity Christian College in their latest CCAC match-up. TIU made quick work of the Trolls, ending the game in straight sets.

Evenly matched from the start, the Trojans and Trolls battled for the lead as it changed a total of seven times throughout the initial set while seeing a tied score at 18 different junctures. At most, either team strung together three consecutive points before the serve changed hands again. One such occasion, the Trojans landed back to back kills from Brianna Torres and Theresa Romero to take a 23-2 lead before the Trolls called for time. From the break, Trinity Christian took the next point before Torres landed another kill. The Trolls took another two points to force extra competition as neither team refused to relent. With the score at 27-27 the toll of the game began to be felt as the final four points came from attacking errors that ultimately benefited the Trojans who took the set 30-28

Feeling the momentum from winning an unusually lengthy set, TIU burst out of the gates in set two to take an 11-4 lead over the Trolls. The cushion in score was short lived however, as Trinity Christian fired back in mass with a run of six points to cut the Trojans lead to just one. Stunned, TIU wrestled to take back momentum while the Trolls continued to surge forward. A time out by Coach Ward after the Trolls took the lead served its purpose as the Trojans took the ensuing point. Trading points for just a moment, the Trojans then went on a seven point run, disturbed only by the Trolls attempt to shift momentum back through a time out of their own. At 22-17 TIU tightened their focus while Trinity Christian seemed to lose theirs, giving up the final three points from errors and allowing the Trojans an easy end to the set.

The final set consisted of smaller runs and much less back and forth as the Trojans took the lead early and held it throughout, with the Trolls matching them just once. Trinity International held a two point lead at 13-11 before grabbing six in a row to surge forward. Ending the run with a kill, the Trolls tried to string together offensive pressure but only dotted the scoreboard for a few more points. A kill by Halsie Keltner would be the final blow to seal the ten point victory, 25-15.

Leading the team in assists, freshman Isabella Acosta earned a career-high 15 assists for the evening with veteran Anna Skrzypchak close behind giving out 14. Brianna Torres delivered 18 kills on the evening while diving for 10 digs behind team-leading Jaylyn Freeman with 15 digs.

The Trojans are now 20-7, holding a 9-3 record in conference at the third spot behind Saint Xavier and St. Ambrose. Taking a weekend break, Trinity is back in action again next Tuesday on the road against IU South Bend before coming back home on Thursday October 27th to face IU Northwest.
