BANNOCKBURN, Ill. — Yesterday afternoon the Trojans assembled on Schartner Field for their final home game of the season, a conference battle against the Fighting Bees of Saint Ambrose University, where they honored seven members of the program for their contributions throughout their careers. Despite a picture perfect day for the occasion, Trinity fell to the Bees 1-0.
Before kick-off the Trojans took a few moments to recognize seven graduating seniors: Sarah Davis, Kinsey Gomez, Cresencia Kerr, Olivia McAleer, Abigail Olsson, Kalie Rice and Micah Wassink. The seven seniors represented four different states and a variety of majors while their athletic and academic achievements included much to boast of as well. Escorted by loved ones, each of the women were presented with flowers and a framed action shot portrait of themselves as their hometowns and future plans were announced to the crowd of roughly 100 fans.
Out of the gates, the Fighting Bees swarmed the Trojans with a myriad of shots and corner kicks in the initial fifteen minutes. Trinity's defense was up to the task though, blocking the majority of attempts or forcing them wide of the net. As the half wore on, both teams created opportunities at the opposing goal though the box score favored Ambrose in shots by just one. The Trojans displayed their fortitude in defending seven corner kicks throughout the first half. In the final minute of the half, TIU looked to take the lead with a rocket shot from center midfielder Emily Soriaga that unfortunately sailed high of the net.
Entering the second half at a standstill, the Trojans had the first look at goal from sophomore Elizabeth Bayert looking to score in consecutive games but stopped by Saint Ambrose's goalkeeper. From the punt, the Fighting Bees took over possession and moved into the Trojans' territory. Trinity blocked a shot while successfully defending another pair of corner kicks. A handball by Ambrose gave the Trojans a spot kick and turned momentum for a few minutes as Payton Siragusa and Abigail Olsson peppered the Fighting Bees' goal with consecutive shots and forced their keeper to work to maintain the clean sheet. A quick transition by Saint Ambrose found the Trojans suddenly on their heels as senior keeper Sarah Davis made the save.
In a controversial call, the Fighting Bees scored with twenty minutes left in the game after a shot ripped off the crossbar and bounced straight down before Davis grabbed it. The officials called the bounce inside the goal line, despite protests from Davis herself and head coach Morgan Helms. Unfortunately, that would be the game winning goal as the Trojans managed just one additional shot following the call.
The Trojans (4-11-2) wrap up their season next Saturday afternoon in their final CCAC contest against the Jaguars of Governors State University. Kick-off is slated for 5:30pm in Crown Point, Indiana on Saturday.
