TIU defeats Calumet in four sets

WHITING, IN — Earlier this afternoon the Trojans took a trip to Indiana for their latest CCAC match-up, this time facing off with the Crimson Wave of Calumet College of St. Joseph. After four sets, the Trojans emerged victorious in their continued march towards playoffs and the CCAC tournament championship.

Out of the gates hard and fast, the Trojans took an 8-3 lead after a four point rally initiated by a kill from freshman Theresa Romero. Calumet responded with a time out then the ensuing two points before the teams began to battle back and forth. Nadia Wheeler landed her first kill of the night to start another run of four points for Trinity that included back to back service aces by libero Jaylyn Freeman, bringing the score to 19-9. Trinity made quick work of the Crimson Wave to end the set 25-13.

A similar start, though not as commanding, the Trojans took a 7-5 lead behind consecutive kills by sophomore Madison Williams. With the score tied at 8-8 the Trojans benefited from a pair of Crimson Wave errors to take the lead and would hold it until the final point. Calumet landed two kills in a row at 14-12 but the Trojans ran back to the bench with the second set in hand, allowing the Crimson Wave just one additional point following that pair. The Trojans notched 16 kills in the stanza, nearly half by Williams.

Entering the third set the Trojans lost focus, as they gave up numerous errors and granted Calumet a 3-10 lead. Regrouping, Trinity took advantage of a Crimson Wave error and gathered a bit of momentum to close the gap. At 9-15, veteran Lana Vujosevic landed a kill assisted by Freeman before Halsie Keltner caught fire with three kills in a row to draw a timeout by Calumet. The Trojans met the Crimson Wave at 19-19 after another kill by Williams and the teams traded points to meet again at 21-21. Taking the next two points, TIU looked to finish the rally and take the set but the Crimson Wave gave another push and forced extra points before ultimately riding out the victory.

Still riding momentum from the previous set, Calumet took the lead 4-2 before the Trojans evened it up again. At 5-7, the Trojans went on a four point rally to take their first lead of the set that would hold to the end. Swapping services, both sides marched towards 25 unable to string more than a couple points together until freshman Isabella Acosta notched a kill that started a six point run to give the Trojans a seven point lead at 22-15. A few errors by Trinity broke the run before they were returned the favor by the Crimson Wave, winning out the set 25-18.

Junior transfer Halsie Keltner had a career night while co-leading the attack with sophomore Madison Williams, each earning kills a piece. Keltner also buried a season high three aces with four digs. Aiding the Trojans on defense, freshman Isabella Acosta continued to shine as she scored six total blocks on the day while providing a season-high 15 assists. Williams also matched her career best with five total blocks.

Trinity returns to the court again on Tuesday evening when they will honor their senior class with a pre-match ceremony. Slated to take on the Lakers of Roosevelt University, the opening serve is set for 7:00pm at Van Dixhorn Arena.
