BANNOCKBURN, IL — The Trojans set out to defend home turf against the conference rival Indiana University South Bend (IUSB) Titans on Tuesday afternoon, a mission they accomplished behind the strength of an impressive nine-goal onslaught.
The Trojans came on strong right from the opening kickoff, with Abigail Olsson finding the back of the net twice in a span of 11 minutes to help Trinity build up a commanding 2-0 lead. The Trojans struck again later in the period, with Sydney Matthews taking a give-and-go feed from Sarah Krick and blasting it past the keeper to notch her first career goal. IUSB managed to steal one back at the stroke of halftime, with a bouncing ball finding its way in after a mad scramble as time expired to set the score at 3-1 in favor of Trinity at the midway point.
The Trojans responded to the IUSB tally in brilliant fashion, coming out with a vengeance in the second frame. Trinity made it 4-1 in the 53rd minute when
Olivia McAleer, a four-year Trojan, found the back of the net for the first time in her career, before being subsequently engulfed by a joyous Trojan mob. The Trojans maintained that positive energy for the rest of the match, busting the game wide open with five for goals before the final horn sounded.
Payton Siragusa,
Elizabeth Bayert,
Emily Soriaga, Krick, and Olsson scored for Trinity, with Olsson's goal polishing off her third career hat trick. The finishing burst ballooned the score and eventually set the final reckoning at 9-1 Trojans.
While the Trojans played well throughout the afternoon, they took their swarming defense, expansive possession style of play, and creation of quality chances up another notch down the stretch, converting on the scoreboard in their grandest fashion of the season. Trinity launched a remarkable 35 shots on goal in the contest while only allowing five to their opponent, an impressive ratio that has the Trojans feeling confident as they continue their CCAC slate, now in possession of a second conference victory.
The Trojans (3-8-1) will continue their campaign when they march up to Bourbonnais, Illinois, for another CCAC fixture, this time against the Tigers of Olivet Nazarene University.
