Weekend tournament outing yields tough results for the Trojans

KINGSPORT, Tenn. --- The Trojans took Thanksgiving on the road last weekend as they traveled to Tennessee to participate in a couple of matchups in the NAIA "The Show" Tournament. Facing a pair of strong opponents, Trinity gave a commendable effort but ultimately fell short in both contests.

First tip-off was Friday afternoon against the undefeated Lions of Freed-Hardeman University. Three Trojans hit double-digit points with season standout performances: Amber Reynolds (12), Breleigh Gula (12) and Saskia Stegbauer (10). Reigning CCAC and NCCAA player of the week Da'Naria Washington controlled the boards alongside with Twanasia Graves, each recording eight rebounds. Showing their grit through a tough opening half, Trinity gave their best 10-minute segment in the third quarter, shooting over 35% from the field and 60% from the perimeter while earning more second chance points than the Lions 13-9. At the final whistle, TIU lost 44-71.

Less than 24 hours later, the Trojans took the court again for their second tournament match-up, this time facing the Royals of Johnson University. A stronger performance in their second showing the Trojans matched the Royals point for point in the first quarter before Johnson began to pull away in the second stanza. An emerging trend for the Trojans saw them bounce back with fortitude in the third quarter as six Trojans put up points, led by Washington with seven. From the field the Trojans shot a respectable 58%, while going 4-8 from the arc and 4-6 at the charity line. Again, three Trojans scored double-digits as junior transfer Jakyah Amous put up a season best 17 points, followed by Washington (16) and Reynolds (13). Sophomore Audree Peck came in under the boards to lead the team with eight rebounds, while Gula came close behind with seven. Despite their third quarter push, the Trojans fell 69-83.

The Trojans(2-7) resume conference play this week as the Tigers of Olivet Nazarene University visit Deerfield on Wednesday afternoon, tipping off at 5:30pm at Van Dixhorn Arena.
