Trojans mount impressive offensive effort in loss

BANNOCKBURN, IL—The Trojan offense was firing on all cylinders on Wednesday night, thrilling their home crowd with a season-high 82 points, but the typhoon of buckets wasn't quite enough to overcome the visiting Tigers of Olivet Nazarene, who bested Trinity by a 108-82 margin.

The Tigers ambushed the Trojans in the early stages of the contest, frequently substituting all five of their players out for an entirely fresh unit and implementing a stifling full court press. The unique strategy caught the Trojans off guard, and the Tigers quickly established a 12-point edge over the stunned home side. Late in the period, the Trojans found some life, rekindling momentum on the merits of a pair of successive triples by sharpshooting guard Amber Reynolds and versatile forward Audree Peck. The long-range strikes ignited a furious Trinity scoring spree that was fueled by the heroics of Trojan center Saskia Stegbauer, who registered six points and four boards in the period. All told, the Trojans whittled the Olivet edge down to a mere three points, closing the quarter on a blistering 13-4 run to set the score at the buzzer at 24-21 Olivet.

The Trojans continued to roll into the second quarter, skillfully breaking the press to lead to several easy buckets early in the frame. Coach Courtney Peay's side made a plethora of effective adjustments, reaping the rewards as they staked out a four-point lead while shuffling personnel frequently, giving the Tigers a taste of their own medicine. While the Olivet attack came alive once more later in the period, the Trojans continued to stand toe-to-toe with their skilled opponent, trimming the Tiger lead to just two at the end of the opening half. After a strong first quarter, Stegbauer raised her game even higher in the subsequent stanza, crafting a well-measured blend of mid-range baskets and inside finishes to post a 10-point quarter. As the horn sounded, Olivet was in front by a razor-thin 51-49 tally.

Trinity continued to claw in the early portion of the third quarter, cutting the lead down to one, but the Tigers' ability to summon fresh legs at every available juncture eventually began to wear down the persistent Trojan squad. The Trojans didn't give up however, with their do-it-all point guard Da'Naria Washington spearheading the Trojan resistance, notching five points, two rebounds, and two helpers in the quarter. Despite the Trojans' best efforts, the Olivet outburst resulted in an 83-60 Tiger lead after 30 minutes of play.

Though the game was largely out of reach entering the fourth, you wouldn't have known it from the effort displayed by Coach Peay's bunch. The Trojans relied on a many-pronged attack throughout the quarter, with six different Trojans checking into the scoresheet. While the Trojans couldn't walk away with the W, they did claim a series of moral victories, as Hattie Black and Alyssen Noriega each cashed in on their first three of the season while freshman Jasmine Smith got extended run in her collegiate debut. When the final buzzer signaled the end of the Trojans' solid offensive performance, the Tigers had emerged victorious.

While the Trojans didn't claim the result they were seeking on Wednesday night, they did have a lot to be proud of, fighting to the very end as they set a new season-high with 82 points. Stegbauer led the way for the Trinity offense, dropping a personal season high of 24 points while filling up the box score with six rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. Washington was also up to her old tricks, funneling in 18 points to go with eight dimes and six rebounds. Reynolds (nine points), Peck (11 rebounds), Jakyah Amous (eight points, seven rebounds, five assists), and Kaiya Albert (7 points) were also major contributors for the Trojans, who again showcased their persistence and offered flashes of brilliance despite the defeat.

The Trojans(2-8) will look to build on their efforts and keep the offense rolling in another tough conference tilt when they travel to Davenport, Iowa, to square off with St. Ambrose on December 3.
