TIU falls to IU Northwest in latest CCAC battle

GARY, Ind. --- For their first tip off in two weeks, the Trojans took a short trip across the state line for a CCAC clash with the Redhawks of IU Northwest. A slow start brushing off the dust put Trinity behind early and ultimately they couldn't recover, dropping the contest 50-86.

The Trojans took initiative at the start, taking the first three shots of the game while forcing turnovers, but struggled to convert on the board until senior Amber Reynolds opened scoring with a jumper after ninety seconds. For the next six minutes the Trojans chased the game as the Redhawks went on a scoring flurry with a run of 16 points. Regaining composure, Trinity grabbed back six points before the whistle with a jump shot and free throw from transfer Kaiya Albert and a three-pointer from sophomore Ashley Geisler.

In the second half, TIU settled in with almost 50% shooting, 66% from the perimeter and a perfect streak at the charity line. Transfer student Jakyah Amous sank a jumper from the field followed by a trey shortly thereafter to cut the Redhawks lead nearly in half. Taking back to back buckets, Audree Peck got on the scoresheet with a textbook shot while Geisler hit another from the arc. In the final two minutes, both teams traded free throws and the Trojans entered the break behind 22-36.

Amous continued rolling the Trojan's attack, dropping a layup after teammate Da'Naria Washington grabbed the steal in the second minute. Stuttering from the floor, Trinity couldn't get on the board for the middle portion of the quarter until Washington took a foul and sank both opportunities. Amous followed suit with a pair of her own before collecting another layup. The Trojans closed out the quarter with a buzzer beating layup from Washington, still behind 34-55.

TIU saved their best for last, dropping 16 points in the final quarter as six different players added to the board. Seniors Hattie Black and Breleigh Gula stepped in with four points each, as Black also snatched three rebounds. Unfortunately, the offensive spark came too late and the Trojans fell to defeat.

Trinity (2-10) will look to regroup quickly as they face another conference opponent, Saint Ambrose, on Tuesday afternoon before their holiday break.
