BANNOCKBURN, Ill. --- After a short weekend break for the Christmas holiday, the Trojans were back on the court again on Wednesday afternoon as their non-conference opponent, the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone University made the trip to Deerfield. A slow start put Trinity in a tough spot and despite a dominant third quarter, the Trojans fell 45-73.
The Trojan's effort was majority-led by their sophomore class yesterday as Da'Naria Washington and Saskia Stegbauer put up 11 and nine points, respectively, with both securing seven below the boards. Audree Peck commanded the space below the net, grabbing 13 total rebounds and at least six more than any other player on the court. Also grabbing seven rebounds was Trojan center Breleigh Gula.
Facing an unrelenting Golden Eagles offense, the Trojans defensive endeavor was resilient as they outrebounded their opponent 46 to 29 in total and 29 to 8 while protecting their side of the court. A team effort through and through, six Trojans grabbed at least one defensive rebound while eight snatched possession from the Golden Eagles.
Just before the half time break, freshman Jasmine Smith sank her first career three-pointer to propel the Trojan offense into the third quarter. Out of the break, Trinity came out swinging as their offense lit up, dropping 20 points in the ten minute frame and outscoring Cornerstone 20-13. Unfortunately, the Trojans struggled to maintain that momentum throughout the fourth quarter and fell to defeat.
Trinity (2-12, 1-7), will resume their CCAC schedule with a trio of games, starting on January 4th in Milwaukee against the Wolves of Cardinal Stritch, as they seek to improve their conference record.
