Trojans fall to Redhawks after late run in fourth quarter sends game to overtime

GARY, IND. ---  Yesterday evening the Trojans were back on the road as they traveled to Indiana to tip off against the Redhawks of Indiana University Northwest. An extremely tight first half and a breakaway quarter for each team in the second half forced the game into overtime where the Redhawks took over and handed the Trojans defeat, 71-61.

In the first five minutes of the game, Trinity and IUN traded baskets before the Trojans scored two back to back and took the lead 10-6. With a minute remaining, the Redhawks dropped a 3-pointer to tie the game and another three points after that to pass the Trojans. As the buzzer sounded, Taylor Hibicke hit a layup to end the quarter behind by a single point.

The Redhawks opened the second quarter with consecutive layups before Hibicke landed a jumper bringing the score to 16-19. The following five minutes saw the two teams swapping layups before a lull in scoring with around three minutes remaining. A foul by IUN put Louisa Schmidt at the line and she dropped both free throws to close the gap 25-22. Daniela Lopez closed the second quarter with a layup, leaving the Trojans behind on the scoreboard, 27-25.

After the break, the Trojans tied up the score 27-27 and the Redhawks countered with a 3-pointer to take the lead again. In the next four minutes, the score broke even again twice before Trinity went on a 6-0 run to close out the quarter.

Starting the fourth quarter in the lead, the Trojans added to the scoreline after a layup by Alina Jahnke and a 3-pointer by Taylor Hibicke increasing their lead to 45-37. The Redhawks pushed back with a couple of free throws and a jumper but a 3-pointer by Da'Naria Washington kept the lead by seven points. With little over two minutes remaining, Jahnke dropped a layup and gave the Trojans their biggest lead of the game at 52-43.

In the final two minutes, the Redhawks rallied to score nine points and tie the game, culminating with a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. Trinity opened extra time with a 3-pointer by Carly Scheblo but IUN answered with a 3-16 run and defeated the Trojans in overtime.
